8 Tips on how to deal with Homesickness

February 21, 2023

In this post you will find the 10 best Tricks on how to deal with homesickness or blues if you travel for a long time.

I went for a long travel this year. Almost one year I suffered from homesickness, especially in the beginning. We were in Bali and it was so different from being in Europe, that’s why it was so much harder for me to make it feel like home. But after a period of time i was used to the country and it was so much better for me to make myself a home.

1. Let yourself and cry, when feeling homesick

Sometimes it is better to just cry and let everything out. For myself it is not so helpful, because I can’t stop myself from feeling more sad than before. But often it is better to not push the Homesickness aside and let it be.

2. Call someone

For me it helps to talk to my mum or my cousin, about how I am feeling. They understand me the most and know how I am feeling. Call that person for you and that will help you to feel a little better. Maybe that person can distract you.

3. Go see something

Most of the time you will have homesickness in the morning or afternoon, because it is the time you feel the loneliest. Push yourself to go outside and see something new. Then you will feel better and are a little distracted from feeling pity about yourself and your situation.

4. Make yourself home

Make yourself a home and find the place where you feel the best and most comfortable. Maybe you’re hotelbed or at the pool and then I just chill and listen to my fav. music or watch tv, draw etc. Everything that makes me feel good. I can also recommend journaling about your experiences, that way you just see the good side of your trip.

5. Everybody wants this

It’s a little bit rude to say that, but you have to think about, that everybody wants to travel like you at the moment. So many people also wanted to travel for a long time and leave home behind, but they never did. You are doing it right now!

6. How would it be at home?

Most of the time, you want to be at home because you think that home would be much better right now. But I know most of the time it isn’t. You would sit at home doing nothing or go to work. Enjoy and be thankful for your situation right now and where you are. Not many people can be as brave as you and travel so far away for such a long time.

7. Meet new people

Try to meet new people in this unknown situation and chat with them a little bit. Go out of your comfort zone! Maybe through a bumble friend or just where you are right now. These people will make you happier in the place you are right now and you will find friends in different countries and states.

8. You can always go home

Most of the time, you can always come home when you don’t want to be there anymore. It is not a shame to go home if you don’t want to be in this situation right now. And I bet friends and Family would be grateful to see you again. If you can’t go home. Think about the time when you can. It is not that far away, right? Time will fly by so fast!

Thank you for reading my post! I can understand you very well in having Homesickness from time to time but it will go by like every bad thing in life!
